Grants totaling $39.9 million in 21 states has been announced by The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). These grants dedicated to help non-elderly individuals and families with disabilities to get an affordable private house.

Mel Martinez, HUD Secretary said “Because of their special needs, young people with disabilities often face difficulties finding suitable, accessible housing they can afford,” then he follows “These vouchers will give them the financial assistance they need to find safe, affordable housing.”

These two HUD programs will be helping Housing Choice Vouchers to non-elderly disabled families, they are:

* Rental Assistance for Non-Elderly Persons with Disabilities Related to Certain Developments – $23.5 million

* Rental Assistance for Non-Elderly Persons with Disabilities in Support of Designated Housing Plans – $16.4 million

The qualified applicants may use these vouchers to have the opportunity to pay not more than 30 percent of their income for renting housing units.

Actually the vouchers are originally a part of three existing HUD programs, they are:

* Mainstream vouchers
Help both elderly and non-elderly families that have disabled family members

* Designated housing vouchers
This program will assist non-elderly families who are eligible and Families affected by a PHA decision.

* Certain development vouchers
This kind of vouchers will help non-elderly families which have disabled family members who are not yet received any housing assistance restricted to elderly families.
