An individual grant is a grant given to a person who needs money for education, housing or other personal needs. A grant is free money that a person does not have to pay back, unlike loans which are borrowed money.Individual grants are obtained when the government sees fit to fund an individual. Governments of the United States and Canada both offer such grants.

People often don’t believe that free government money is available for them and simply “lazy” to apply. A lot of these grants have been created for veterans, the disabled, senior citizens and low-income earners.

When an individual submits a government grant application it can take about a day and when an organisation applied it can take several weeks. It is very important to get applications sent in straight away so that you are not losing out. With access to 1,000 grant programs (totaling over $500 billion annually), Grants.gov is an ideal place to begin searching for free government grant applications online. Searches can be performed by keyword, by category, or by agency. Take note though, while finding information on the site is simple, to apply for a grant you must register with Grants.gov.
